Living Out Our Mission

Students are the beneficiaries of the missional investment made by faculty and staff at Seattle Christian each day as well as the eventual carriers of that mission into the world. This mission statement represents the core commitments of the faculty, staff, administration, and Board of Trustees to ensure a flourishing context in which these tenets can become a reality for all students.

“They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:8).

Elements of the SCS Mission Statement

PROCLAIM

To proclaim Jesus Christ in all aspects of our program…

The role of the Christian school is to usher students into God’s presence each day. Students get to not only learn about the Lord, but experience his love and gain a sense of what God’s heart is like by how faculty and staff engage and relate with them. This requires intentionality throughout every layer of the organization and the student experience, not only infused in Bible classes and chapel times but throughout all courses, athletics, activities, recess, etc. For this to be a reality, faculty and staff must not only be equipped in their roles and committed to the mission but must surrender to the Lord each day. It is only in surrendering to Jesus as “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6) that we truly find victory and are able to exude abiding joy and grace in all we do, no matter the context or circumstances. We proclaim Jesus so that students may encounter him and ultimately embrace the greatest commands articulated by Jesus: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Luke 10:27).

EMPHASIZE

Emphasizing academic excellence and biblical Christian values…

Seattle Christian is both a school and a ministry. It is the bringing together, or integration, of faith and learning for the next generation of servant leaders. As the Psalmist puts it, “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” (Psalm 78:72) We exist to empower students as leaders in both heart and skill so that their doing and their being are in sync with God’s design, lived out with excellence, and expressed as worship to the Lord. As Scripture says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24). If this is to happen, faculty and staff must be trained and cared for in a manner that positions them each day to give their best as they holistically engage each student. We emphasize academic excellence and biblical Christian values so they students may pursue faith and learning to the fullest extent for the rest of their lives.

PARTNER

Partnering with parents and the church…

We are hard wired by God the Creator for community. Relationship is the avenue through which God’s kingdom expands and we experience his love in real time on full display. The challenges of our world are too large to tackle, and the opportunities too great, to embrace on our own. We must be in partnership. Even Jesus himself assembled a team, a small group of diverse and committed people who would ultimately change the world. For Seattle Christian to live out its mission, there must be genuine and meaningful partnership with the parents and the local churches. The most critical unit of this partnership is the family, God’s most fundamentally established relational context. The church gets to invite families into community. The Christian school, then, gets the honor of coming alongside families and the church to help bolster the equipping of students as kingdom partners around God’s mission. Perhaps the boldest and most direct passage in the Bible on bringing up the next generation in the ways of the Lord is found in Deuteronomy 6, known as the Shema, where Moses, as God’s mouthpiece, calls the people to listen…
“These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.”
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
Seattle Christian is called to go beyond just effectively communicating with parents and connecting with local churches but to explore more powerful and helpful ways to engage together around raising up the next generation in our own response to the Shema. We partner with families and the churches in the region so that students learn to live out their purpose for the Lord for generations to come.

PREPARE

To prepare godly young men and women…

Our world is in desperate need of a generation of Christ followers across all industries, fields of study, and contexts to courageously lead from a place of grace and truth. As image bearers of God, our identity as people…our hope…can only be found in Christ. God calls us to an upside-down kingdom, where, as Jesus himself puts it, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26). This commitment to preparing students to be anchored in faith and live accordingly is no easy task, especially in a society where ideologies often run counter to God’s design and the example of Jesus. Thus, it is imperative that we equip students to be anchored in Scripture, prayerful, joyful, effective in conversation, loving toward all people without condoning misalignment with the Word, missional, able to operate with firm centers and soft edges, curious about one another’s stories, humble and discerning, compassionate, disciplined, willing to suffer for the Lord, peaceful, fruitful, and honoring. As Peter admonishes, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander” (I Peter 3:15-16). At its core, situating this generation to live for the Lord means we must embrace the most distinctive indicator to others that we follow Jesus: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35) We prepare students so that they develop into Jesus followers who live and love according to God’s Word and the abundant life found in him.

IMPACT

So they may impact their world for Christ.

Ultimately, the entire mission and existence of Seattle Christian School comes down to one word…impact. This multi-year investment of time, energy, prayer, and financial resources culminates in alumni fully living for the Lord in a way that makes a difference in the lives of those around them. Scripture offers numerous passages and stories around what this looks like, including being imitators of God (Ephesians 5), being ministers of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:18), being about transforming rather than conforming (Romans 12:1-2), showing a commitment “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), living by the Spirit (Galatians 5), and many more. Could it be that our Warriors, like Queen Esther, are being positioned “for such a time as this” to bring about restoration in our world? (Esther 4:14). When it’s all said and done, the heart of the SCS mission is for students to live out the Great Commission, where Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).
